Sheriff Michael Saudino along with Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo and Chief of Detectives Robert Anzilotti would like to announce that one of Bergen’s Most Wanted, Luis Cardenas, was arrested and extradited from Bogota, Colombia to face justice here in Bergen County.

On February 14th, 2004, Cardenas was arrested and charged by the Dumont Police Department with three counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault (on a minor) and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. He was lodged in the Bergen County Jail with bail set at $150,000.00. Ten days later, on February 24th, 2014, Cardenas made bail and skipped subsequent court appearances, making him one of Bergen County’s Most Wanted Fugitives.

Detectives from the Bergen County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Squad gathered intelligence, through investigations which were aided by anonymous tips phoned in to their squad, and believed Cardenas was possibly living in the Bogota, Colombia Area. With assistance from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the United States Marshal’s Service, Colombian Law Enforcement was provided with the information gleaned from the investigation and subsequently arrested Cardenas approximately one month ago. Cardenas then went through extradition proceedings with the Colombian government.

Today, Colombian authorities turned custody of Cardenas over to the United States Marshal’s Service in Colombia where agents boarded a plane with Cardenas and transported him to Newark Liberty International Airport. Once back on American soil, the U.S. Marshal’s Service turned custody of Cardenas over to detectives from the Bergen County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Squad.

Fourteen years later and 2,500 miles away, the Bergen County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Squad, partnering with local, county, federal and international law enforcement partners, never wavered in their commitment to bring one our most heinous fugitives back to Bergen County to face Justice. This sis the second dangerous fugitive from Bergen’s Most Wanted that have been captured in less than 45 days due to the hard work and diligence of our detectives.

Sheriff Saudino would like to thank the Dumont Police Department, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, The United States Marshal’s Service, and our law enforcement partners in Bogota, Colombia for their assistance.
