Sheriff’s Office Hosts Swearing In Ceremony for New Academy Cadets
HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office last night hosted a swearing in ceremony for the first group of cadets of the agency’s new Youth Law Enforcement Leadership Academy. During the ceremony, Sheriff Leo McGuire and BCSO Officers recognized the 29 cadets for their community involvement and interest in public safety.
“It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the Youth Law Enforcement Leadership Academy,” Sheriff McGuire told cadets. “I commend you for taking an active role in the safety of your communities. You are the future of Bergen County. As Law Enforcement Leaders, I know you will continue make us all proud.”
The Youth Law Enforcement Leadership Academy is designed for middle and high school students interested in law enforcement, county government, the judiciary system and emergency services.
Unlike other traditional police academies, the Youth Law Enforcement Leadership Academy is an ongoing program for middle and high school students between the ages of 12 and 19. New cadets are admitted on a rolling basis and are eligible to participate in the Academy through his or her senior year in high school.
Participating young adults are given the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the challenges and skills that make up their community’s police service, providing them with years of growth and leadership opportunities.
Ongoing programs will include presentations from educators from county agencies as well as structured events that are informative, interactive and educational. Cadets will meet several times a month for a variety of experiential activities that include community-based police operations, simulated bomb threat responses, crime scene searches and hostage negotiation tactics.
Cadets will also participate in a variety of active community outreach programs run by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, including charitable events and parades. Internship opportunities are also available for participating cadets.
Upon achieving various ranks in the Academy, cadets will be recognized in official promotion ceremonies. For more information about the Youth Law Enforcement Leadership Academy or to request an application, please call the BCSO’s Community Outreach Unit at 201-336-3540.
