Sheriff Unveils Results of Suspect Detection Systems Pilot in Bergen County Jail Bergen County is First Sheriff’s Office in Nation to Undertake Pilot Program
HACKENSACK, N.J. – Bergen County Sheriff Leo P. McGuire recently presented the results of a pilot program implemented in the Bergen County Jail utilizing proprietary technology from Suspect Detection Systems, Inc., a leading developer of counter terror and crime prevention technology. Bergen County is the first sheriff’s office in the nation to undertake such an initiative with Suspect Detection Systems.
The Sheriff presented the results with Yoav Krill, Chairman of the Board of Directors for SDS, during the 70th Annual National Sheriffs’ Association Conference. Sheriff McGuire and Chairman Krill discussed the use of the company’s COGITO Technology in the Bergen County Jail.
“In Bergen County, we have seen promising results when administering the Cogito system as part of our traditional intake procedures,” Sheriff McGuire said. “In our preliminary results, the system has proven helpful in determining if detainees are currently on drugs, have drugs on them, are involved in gang activity or may be trying to smuggle contraband into the jail.”
The pilot tested the ability of the proprietary COGITO rapid survey system to expose criminal behavior among prison inmates. COGITO was able to discover guilty associations as well as identify the hostile intent of prisoners to commit harmful acts within the prison walls.
The Bergen County Jail is a 1,250-bed facility staffed by more than 300 corrections officers. The COGITO system was tested for its ability to add a layer of protection and enhance safety for both inmates and officers.
An article on the pilot written by Leo P. McGuire, Sheriff of Bergen County, appeared recently in Sheriff Magazine. “We look forward to continuing this partnership with Suspect Detection Systems, Inc. to realize the full potential of this innovative and cutting-edge technology,” Sheriff McGuire added.
“The successful pilot in Bergen County is the first with a county sheriff's office in the United States,” said Gil Boosidan, CEO of Suspect Detection Systems Inc. “We are extremely pleased with the results and hope they serve as a positive example of our technology's capabilities and its application in the large U.S. law enforcement and homeland security markets.”
