Sheriff McGuire Honors Two Local Children as “Sheriffs for a Day”
HACKENSACK, N.J. – Bergen County Sheriff Leo P. McGuire and officers from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office today welcomed two local children and their families to the Bergen County Justice Complex to become Sheriffs for a Day.
The BCSO’s “Sheriff for a Day” Program provides children with chronic health conditions the special opportunity to receive a behind the scenes look at the inner workings of the Sheriff’s Office. As part of today’s program, Sheriff McGuire honored 10-year-old Matthew Frohnapfel from Paramus, who has leukemia, and 9-year-old Tyler Banuls of Lyndhurst, who is autistic.
“It is a privilege and an honor for to be able to offer this special opportunity to these inspirational children,” Sheriff McGuire said. “Matthew and Tyler are my heroes. I hope this is a day that each of them will remember for the rest of their lives – I know I will.”
This morning, Matthew, Tyler and their family were picked up at their homes and escorted to the Sheriff’s Office, where they received their very own Sheriff’s uniforms and had breakfast with the BCSO’s command staff. After an official swearing in ceremony, officers then escorted both children to their schools, where they were honored by their peers.
Following their school assemblies, Tyler and Matthew went horseback riding with the BCSO’s Mounted Unit at Foschini Park and were given a demonstration by the BCSO’s K-9 Unit. At the conclusion of the day, the boys were presented a plaque and honored by the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office during a send-off ceremony at the Bergen County Justice Center.
The “Sheriff for a Day” Program is run through the BCSO’s Community Outreach Unit. If you are interested in having a child that you know become “Sheriff for a Day,” please contact the unit at 201-336-3540.
