Sheriff McGuire Conducts Senior Safety Presentation in Bergenfield
BERGENFIELD, N.J. – Bergen County Sheriff Leo P. McGuire yesterday visited the Sunshine Adult Day Health Care Center to offer local seniors tips on how they can protect themselves from identity theft and fraud. The Sheriff discussed the various forms of identity theft and highlighted ways in which senior citizens can keep themselves from becoming victims.
“With the accessibility of the Internet, we are much more vulnerable today to becoming the victims of a crime than we were years ago,” Sheriff McGuire said. “You can minimize your risks by not giving out personal information over the phone, through the mail or online – unless you have initiated the contact and are sure you know who you are dealing with.”
During the presentation, Sheriff McGuire also highlighted one of BCSO’s safety programs for seniors and individuals with special needs.
The BCSO’s Gold Star Identification Program provides first responders with vital medical information in the event of an emergency. Participants receive a photo identification card, which corresponds to an emergency contact file maintained by the BCSO’s 24-Hour Operations Unit. The program is available for county residents over the age of 65 and residents with special needs.
