Sheriff’s Office Hosts Graduation Ceremony for Inaugural Class of
Citizen’s Police Academy for Teachers
Sheriff McGuire and County Executive McNerney Commend Local Educators for Commitment to Combat Crime with Education

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office tonight will host a graduation ceremony for the inaugural class of the BCSO’s Citizen’s Police Academy for Teachers.  During the ceremony, Sheriff Leo P. McGuire and Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney will honor the 34 members of the class for their community involvement and commitment to public safety.

“I am thrilled to congratulate the inaugural class of our Citizen’s Police Academy for teachers,” Sheriff McGuire said.  “As educators, these men and women have the ability to shape the lives of our future leaders.  By taking an active role in the communities in which they live and work, they can more effectively incorporate public safety into the curriculum and teach our youth a greater appreciation for law enforcement.”

“By completing this specialized training, these men and women have demonstrated that the safety and security of our citizens is major priority,” said County Executive McNerney.  “The information they gained from the academy will help them better understand how law enforcement works. I applaud their commitment to education and making a difference, as well as their spirit of public service and leadership.”

The motto of the 2010 Class is “Educatio Scelus Pugnate,” which means “Combat Crime with Education.”  Class President Maheshwari Mistry and Class Members Hank Mazzucca, Esther Fletcher and Clare Mackey will speak on behalf of the graduating class and present Sheriff McGuire with a plaque.

The Teacher’s Citizen’s Police Academy is modeled after the BCSO’s popular Citizen’s Police Academy for the general public.  The 10-week course is designed to educate participants on the functions of the Sheriff’s Office and the role it plays in Bergen County.

The Academy is offered in a classroom-style format with periodic demonstrations of equipment and tactics used by real officers. Participants gain an understanding of the tools and strategies officers use in a broad range of areas including homeland security preparedness, the Medical Examiner’s Office, gang violence awareness, homicide investigations, K-9 patrol and detection, consumer affairs and ballistics.
