Elmwood Park Man Arrested in Probation Building After Assaulting Officer

Hackensack – Today Sheriff Leo McGuire announced the arrest of 19 year old Joseph Neal of Elmwood Park. Neal entered the probation building at 133 River Street with his girlfriend late yesterday. Mr. Neal’s girlfriend was told that she may loiter in the building while Mr. Neal conducted his business. She in turn told Neal that she wasn't going to wait for him. The two proceeded to argue over a jacket that Neal had given her. Neal began attempting to tear the jacket off of her. Sheriff’s Officers Conway and Matthews attempted to break up the fight. During the ensuring struggle Neal assaulted Officer Matthews. Matthews was able to subdue Neal and detain him. Neal was arrested and brought to Bergen County Jail by Detectives Pell and Farro. He faces charges of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer as well as Hindering Apprehension. His bail has been set at $5,350.

“We rely on our Sheriff’s Officers to ensure the orderly administration of justice and keep us safe by putting themselves in harm’s way,” said Sheriff McGuire. “We will not tolerate anyone who disrespects those efforts by attempting to physically harm our officers.”
