McGUIRE ANNOUNCES ARREST OF 159 PERSONS SOUGHT BY LAW ENFORCEMENT IN ‘OPERATION: CLEAN SWEEP’
Individuals Collectively Owe More Than $1.6 Million
Hackensack – Today Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire announced the results of Operation: Clean Sweep, a 3 weeklong series of raids targeting persons with outstanding warrants throughout Bergen County. The raids resulted in the arrest or surrender of 159 individuals with 173 outstanding warrants. They occurred in 65 towns throughout New Jersey from Mahwah to Tom’s River as well as locations in New York and Pennsylvania.
“I would like to applaud the outstanding work of the officers involved in this operation as well as the excellent leadership demonstrated by Chief Michael Bradley,” said Sheriff McGuire. “Operation: Clean Sweep appears to be the most successful round up of fugitives in the history of Bergen County. These 159 arrests should send a clear signal to anyone on the run from the law in Bergen County: We will find you no matter what you have done and no matter where you are. The men and women of the Sheriff’s Office don’t forgive or forget.”
The arrested individuals owed a collective $1,602,890.50 in court fees, penalties and unpaid support, of which $189,408.52 has been collected. In addition, the Sherriff’s Office collected $7,205 on behalf of taxpayers in the form of booking fees.
“Operation: Clean Sweep is the start of a broader effort aimed at individuals with outstanding warrants presently being sought by the courts. Their capture not only takes some dangerous criminals off the streets and prevents future criminal activity but also forces deadbeat parents to pay up on child support and secures added revenue for taxpayers as booking fees are collected,” McGuire said. “If you presently have a warrant out for your arrest I strongly suggest you turn yourself in to the proper authorities. One way or another, we’re going to get you.”
