Sheriff Commends Officers for Averting Tragedy

HACKENSACK - Today Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire commended Sergeant Garrett Schlicher as well as K-9 Officers Timothy Scannell and James Schielzo for their part in helping to avert tragedy yesterday at the Bergen County Justice Center.

A passer-by noticed 3 juveniles ages 8, 5 and 1in an unattended vehicle which was left running. The individual notified the BCSO's Court Security division, after which Sgt Schlicher then promptly notified Sheriff’s Operations.  Officers Scannell and Schielzo were dispatched to the scene. They then tended to the juveniles' well-being, secured the vehicle and contacted authorities with the New Jersey State Division of Youth and Family Services for further investigation.

The mother, who was attending court at the time, is Christina Alexander (DOB: 4/25/1983) currently of Irvington, NJ and was discovered to have 4 outstanding warrants for her arrest.

"There is no more reprehensible dereliction of duty than a parent who endangers their own children," said Sheriff Leo McGuire. "I would like to commend Sgt. Schlicher and Officers Scannell and Schielzo for their fine work as well as the good samaritan who had the presence of mind to speak up when so many others might have simply walked on by. Together their swift action transformed a potential tragedy into a lesson for every parent out there to take their responsibilities serious. We as police officers surely will."
