SHERIFF McGUIRE ANNOUNCES ARREST OF ONE OF BCSO’S ‘TEN MOST WANTED’

HACKENSACK - Bergen County Sheriff Leo P. McGuire announced the arrest of ALBERTO RONDON-REYES, DOB: 9/10/72, formally of 1830 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY, on Wednesday, January 21, 2009.

The arrest came as a result of an investigation conducted by members of the Bergen Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff Leo P. McGuire, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Joseph Macellaro, the Fairview Police Department, under the direction of Chief John Pinzone, the United States Marshal’s Service NY/ NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, under the direction of James Plousis and the New York Police Department, under the command of Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

“I would like to thank the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the Fairview Police Department, the United States Marshal’s Service, as well as the NYPD for their assistance in this investigation,” said McGuire. “Their participation and its effectiveness is confirmation that when law enforcement weaves a tight enough web, no fugitive can escape justice.”

Alberto Rondon-Reyes’ originating charges stemmed from a 2006 home invasion investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Fairview Police Department. As a result of this investigation, Rondon-Reyes and several co-conspirators were charged with 1st Degree Armed Robbery, 1st Degree Kidnapping, 2nd Degree Armed Burglary, and 3rd Degree Weapons Possession, as well as the conspiracy to commit the aforementioned offenses. After posting bond and attending several court dates, Rondon-Reyes plead guilty in Bergen County Superior Court and was due to be sentenced to several years incarceration with the New Jersey Department of Corrections. However in November of 2008, Rondon-Reyes fled the area and and a warrant for his arrest was issued after he failed to appear for his sentencing. Due to the violent nature of his offenses, Alberto Rondon-Reyes was placed onto the BCSO’s ‘Most Wanted List.’

At the direction of Sheriff McGuire, Detectives Brian Kelly and Chris Lewicki of the BCSO’s Fugitive Unit immediately initiated an intense an intense effort to locate and apprehend Rondon-Reyes. In late December of 2008, Detectives Lewicki and Kelly were able to develop several leads in the New York vicinity for Rondon-Reyes’ whereabouts and enlisted the assistance of the United States Marshal’s Service NY/ NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force to finalize the arrangements for his capture.

On Wednesday, January 21, 2009, Detectives Kelly and Lewicki, Detective Aret Yesiltepe of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, (who is presently on-loan to the USMS Fugitive Task Force), along with officers from the NYPD 42nd Precinct, tracked Rondon-Reyes to a garage on East 73rd Street in mid-town Manhattan. Rondon-Reyes was ultimately located hiding behind a vehicle in the garage where he was working as a mechanic. He was positively identified by Lewicki and Kelly and placed under arrest.

Rondon-Reyes was subsequently lodged in Rikers island as a fugitive from justice, awaiting extradition proceedings.
